Most people I talk to are aware that health insurance provides access to quicker treatment via your chosen consultant at a private hospital or clinic of your choice. But few people are aware of the different cover options available that mean you can really tailor your medical insurance plan so that it meets your lifestyle needs and budget.
Here, I reveal exactly what they are but, remember, if you’re looking for insurance to protect your health, life, or income, Moore Health & Protection can help. That’s what we’ve been doing for over 20 years and there’s no fee payable when you get in touch.
Outpatient cover
This is one of the most common additions to health insurance cover and pays for tests, consultations and treatment that are carried out on an outpatient basis. Typically, this includes the likes of MRIs, CTs, PET scans, blood tests, X-rays, pathology and any other radiology appointments. Some insurance providers also offer physiotherapy sessions with this option.
Hospital list
One of the biggest benefits of private health insurance is that you can choose which consultants you speak to, at what time and when. However, you can also add on something called a hospital list to your cover which allows you to choose which hospitals you’d like to be treated at.
Therapies cover
As well as general medical care, private health cover can also provide access to alternative treatments and therapy like acupuncture and homoeopathy. While every cover is different, nowadays, some providers include chiropractic and osteopathy treatment, chiropody and podiatry treatment and even consultations with dieticians.

Mental health cover
I’ve covered this topic in full in another blog but many health insurance providers also provide cover for mental health support and treatment. This includes talking therapy, online and face-to-face counselling, outpatient consultations, inpatient and day patient treatment, and you could even get access to health apps which can provide immediate GP support and ways to manage your mental health at-home.
Optical, dental and hearing insurance
Few know that with the right private health insurance, you can actually claim back expenses related to eye tests and new prescriptions for contact lenses and glasses. You could also receive payment for routine dentist appointments and treatments as well as standard hearing tests and hearing aids.
Travel insurance
What’s more, private health insurance could also cover you if you go abroad and require emergency medical treatment. Not to mention, it can cover you for travel vaccinations and medication. In some cases, you can even add specific insurance onto your policy that covers for accidents and injury, including during winter sports.
