Coeliac Awareness Month: Why It Matters To Us

May marks Coeliac Awareness Month which aims to bring attention to a condition that affects thousands of people in the UK. What’s more, at MOORE Health & Protection Ltd, this month is especially important to us because founder, Tony Moore, is one of them.

What is coeliac disease?

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition where the body wrongly attacks its own tissue when gluten is consumed. This causes damage and inflammation to the lining of the small intestine and makes it difficult for the body to absorb nutrients. Some of the most common symptoms include bloating, stomach pain, fatigue, weight loss, diarrhoea, constipation, skin rashes and anaemia.

The challenge of getting a diagnosis

Coeliac disease affects about 1 in 100 people in the UK, but only 30% are diagnosed. Diagnosing it can be complex and often requires blood tests, an endoscopy and biopsies as well as follow up care with specialist dieticians and gastrointestinal teams. Long waiting times for appointments and procedures mean that, for many, it can take years to get diagnosed, leaving individuals with unexplained symptoms and delays in accessing the right care.

Early diagnosis is key too as the condition can lead to complications like osteoporosis and infertility. However, some people are unfortunately waiting up to 13 years for a diagnosis

How private health insurance can help

The reality is that many people with ongoing symptoms face long waiting times – especially for consultations with specialist professionals and for diagnostic procedures. This is why private healthcare is often seen as a solution. Think:

●      Quicker access to diagnostics and specialists

●      Shorter waiting times

●      Greater choice of facilities and professionals

●      Support services including access to mental health professionals and dieticians

It’s important to note that if you already have symptoms or have already been diagnosed with coeliac disease, insurers may want to exclude it from your health insurance, or they might offer limited benefits depending on the underwriting terms. If, however, you take out insurance before developing symptoms or receiving a diagnosis, you’re likely to be able to get comprehensive cover for the condition and any related treatment. What’s more, in doing so, you’re more likely to receive an earlier diagnosis, more personalised care and peace of mind – even if you’re managing a pre-existing or chronic condition

Tony says: “Thanks to private medical insurance, I was able to get a quick diagnosis which helped me to manage symptoms and hit the road to recovery much quicker. This included two exploratory procedures as well as dietician support post-diagnosis.”
