The third Monday in January is dubbed Blue Monday and, for 2023, that day falls on Monday 16th January. The theory is that we’re all cold, we might have the sniffles and our festive spirit has well and truly gone. Not to mention, the Christmas credit card bills are beginning to appear. It’s widely known as one of the most depressing days of the year.

Of course, Blue Monday isn’t the only day that some people will be feeling low or anxious. 1 in 6 adults  in the UK will experience depression in their lives and the NHS says 1 in 4 will experience mental health issues. What’s more, nearly 13% of all sick days can be attributed to mental health.

If you’re one of these people, you might be pleased to know that there are health insurance policies related to mental health. Not only do these provide access to essential support but they could help you to afford your current lifestyle if you need to be away from work, long-term.

Insurance for mental health

Private health insurance covers the cost of treatment for a range of medical conditions, including those associated with mental health. As well as this, it can also be used for mental health support and the cost of recovery. Some providers even include mental health rehabilitation services, tailored treatment plans, assessments, and 24-hour mental health services.

While treatment and support may be available on the NHS, health insurance means that you’ll be referred to a private hospital – which is often much quicker. What’s more, you can choose where and when you receive treatment, which is one of the biggest benefits of private healthcare insurance.

Most mental health conditions are covered by private medical insurance too. This includes:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • OCD
  • Phobias
  • PTSD

This list isn’t exhaustive though which is why it’s important to check with individual insurance providers. At Moore Health and Protection, if you’re looking for a policy for a specific condition, we can recommend providers that we know cover it.

So, what’s the catch?

Unfortunately, not all standard insurance policies cover mental health. In this case, mental health insurance is treated as an add-on to an existing policy. Most policies also won’t cover you for pre-existing medical conditions – and pre-existing mental health conditions are no different.

However, just because you’ve suffered from a mental health problem like stress in the past doesn’t mean you won’t be able to get cover for anxiety or depression in the future. It’s important to tell your provider about any pre-existing conditions though because, if not, you risk your policy being void.

Not every mental health condition is covered either – the most common one being dementia. Your insurer may also put a limit on how much cover you can receive. This includes the number of mental health treatment and support sessions you’re entitled to. This will depend on the specific insurance company which is why it’s important to weigh up your options and needs.
